Dangers of Vaping

Dyana Macalino   October 7, 2018

It is common knowledge that smoking is dangerous to one's health. We see graphic photos of burned lungs and gangrene on packs of cigarettes and it is a commercial feature when watching movies in a cinema. To combat this, companies have marketed vaping and e-cigarettes, a “healthy” alternative to smoking. With claims that it does not burn the lungs and comes in a variety of pleasant smelling flavors, people flock to vaping as a smoking substitute but is it really better than traditional cigarettes? Despite not containing tobacco, e-cigarettes come with their own set of health risks.

The basics

E-cigarettes are battery operated machines. They look like batteries or cigarettes with buttons, refillable tanks, and LED lights. They can be found in many stalls in malls and are marketed as a healthy alternative to cigarettes. You can get your nicotine fix without the bad breath and unpleasant smell of smoke associated with cigars.

How do they work?

1.The machine has a cartridge which contains a liquid called e-juice made of flavorings, nicotine, and other chemicals.

2.When you smoke, there is a heating mechanism that transforms the liquid into vapor.

Chemicals and additives

Most e-juice contains nicotine, an addictive chemical that when a user stops for long periods of time, leaves them feeling irritable and unhappy. Nicotines should be avoided by people with heart problems as studies show that it can hurt arteries.

The flavorings used are another cause for concern. Some brands use diacetyl, a chemical that tastes like butter and is added to food and drinks like popcorn, coffee, rum, brandy, and bread. It is safe to eat but when inhaled, diacetyl is dangerous. It causes a disease called “popcorn lung”, a condition which damages the lungs airways and leads to short of breath and coughing.

E-cigarettes and oral health

Research shows that vaping is just as bad as tobacco. Vaping can lead to mouth cancer, tooth loss, and gum disease. The amount of gum tissue damage caused by e-juice is similar to inhaling tobacco. How does vaping compare to e-cigarettes?

How does vaping compare to e-cigarettes?

Most experts would agree that e-cigarettes are a healthy alternative to vaping. Though it comes with dangers and risk, it is less harmful than tobacco. Vaping does not burn and because there is no smoke, it is less bothersome to the public.
